Job Description

This Assistant U.S. Attorney Job is within the Civil Division, where attorneys represent the federal government, its agencies, and employees in litigation before federal courts and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.

The Civil Division operates through two main sections:

Defensive Litigation

  • Immigration-related cases
  • Employment disputes
  • Tort claims
  • Judicial review of agency decisions
  • Constitutional challenges to federal statutes

Affirmative Litigation

  • Recovering funds obtained through fraud against the government
  • Debt collection on behalf of federal agencies

Key Responsibilities

  • Handle complex immigration-related civil litigation
  • Conduct depositions and discovery
  • Draft motions, pleadings, and briefs
  • Negotiate settlements
  • Try cases in federal court
  • Write and argue appeals

Responsibilities will expand as experience and expertise grow.

Qualifications

Required

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.)
  • Active bar membership (any U.S. jurisdiction)

  • San Antonio: $77,876 – $197,100 (includes 18.78% locality pay)
