The assignment is expected to begin around August 2026 and will last at least 14 months, with the possibility of extension depending on funding availability.
About the Role
The selected attorney will work under OPDAT and the Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section (CCIPS) as part of the U.S. Transnational and High-Tech Crime Global Law Enforcement Network (GLEN).
The ICHIP Attorney Advisor will primarily focus on:
- Combating transnational cybercrime
- Addressing intellectual property crimes
- Supporting regional criminal justice institutions
- Providing strategic legal guidance and case mentoring
- Strengthening international cooperation on cyber investigations and prosecutions
The position is based at the U.S. Embassy in Kuala Lumpur and involves close collaboration with U.S. interagency partners, foreign prosecutors, law enforcement agencies, and judicial officials throughout Asia.
According to OPDAT, the role supports broader U.S. national security and foreign policy objectives by helping partner nations dismantle transnational criminal organizations involved in cybercrime, terrorism, trafficking, illegal migration, gangs, cartels, and financial crimes.
Key Responsibilities
The successful applicant will:
- Advise prosecutors and investigators on cybercrime and IP crime matters
- Mentor foreign justice sector partners on complex prosecutions
- Promote regional cooperation on transnational criminal investigations
- Develop training programs and legal capacity-building initiatives
- Coordinate with OPDAT headquarters, CCIPS, Resident Legal Advisors (RLAs), and U.S. law enforcement agencies
- Represent the Department of Justice in high-level international engagements
Extensive travel throughout Malaysia and the broader region will be required.
Required Qualifications
Applicants must currently be Department of Justice attorneys and meet the following requirements:
GS-15 Level
- Minimum of four years of post-J.D. legal experience
- At least four years of prosecutorial experience in Article III courts or comparable state courts
GS-14 Level
- Minimum of three years of post-J.D. legal experience
- At least three years of prosecutorial experience in Article III courts or comparable state courts
Applicants must also:
- Hold a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree
- Be licensed and authorized to practice law in a U.S. jurisdiction
- Be an active member of the bar in good standing
- Be eligible to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance
Preferred Qualifications
OPDAT is particularly interested in candidates with:
- Extensive cybercrime prosecution experience
- Knowledge of money laundering and financial crimes investigations
- Experience leading complex criminal cases
- Strong international and multicultural communication skills
- Teaching, curriculum design, or bar association involvement
- Ability to provide strategic guidance to prosecutors and law enforcement officials
Salary and Benefits
Because this is a reimbursable detail assignment, selectees will maintain their current base pay. Eligible attorneys may also receive:
