The Department of Justice’s OPDAT is seeking a Resident Legal Advisor job to be stationed at the U.S. Embassy in Maputo, Mozambique. This position plays a crucial role in advancing U.S. national security and foreign policy objectives by strengthening international partnerships in the field of criminal justice.
The RLA will work directly with Mozambican prosecutors, investigators, and judges to build institutional capacity and enhance cooperation in combating transnational crime.

Key Responsibilities
- Provide expert legal guidance and training to justice sector stakeholders in Mozambique
- Support investigations and prosecutions involving:

- Strengthen collaboration between Mozambique and the United States on cross-border criminal cases
- Assist in asset recovery efforts, including assets linked to crimes affecting U.S. interests
- Promote rule of law and institutional development in the justice sector
Qualifications for the Resident Legal Advisor Job
Required
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) and active bar membership in good standing
- Current DOJ attorney
- Prosecutorial experience:
- GS-15: Minimum 4 years (including Article III or equivalent)
- GS-14: Minimum 3 years
- Eligibility for Top Secret security clearance
Preferred
- Experience handling complex criminal cases, especially drug trafficking and financial crimes
- Familiarity with U.S. government policies on transnational crime
- Ability to work in multicultural and international environments
- Strong communication and leadership skills
- Portuguese language proficiency (highly desirable)
- Experience in teaching, training, or curriculum development
