This role is offered via the Office of Overseas Prosecutorial Development, Assistance and Training (OPDAT), a key international arm of the DOJ focused on strengthening global justice systems and combating transnational crime.

About the Role
As a Resident Legal Advisor, you will be embedded at the U.S. Embassy and lead justice-sector development efforts aimed at strengthening Burkina Faso’s capacity to combat terrorism and transnational crime.
You’ll play a direct role in advancing U.S. national security by working with foreign counterparts to disrupt criminal networks before they impact the United States.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic legal guidance to prosecutors, judges, and investigators
- Support counterterrorism and terrorist financing prosecutions
- Build institutional capacity within Burkina Faso’s justice sector
- Strengthen partnerships between U.S. agencies and foreign counterparts
- Assist in prosecuting crimes with a U.S. nexus, including:
- Cybercrime
- Human trafficking
- Drug trafficking
- Organized crime
Qualifications
Required
- Juris Doctor (J.D.)
- Active bar membership in good standing (U.S. jurisdiction)
- Current DOJ attorney
Experience Requirements:
- GS-15: 4+ years post-J.D. + 4 years prosecutorial experience
- GS-14: 3+ years post-J.D. + 3 years prosecutorial experience
- Experience in Article III courts or equivalent state courts
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret clearance
Preferred
- Expertise in drug trafficking and money laundering cases
- Strong understanding of DOJ and U.S. government criminal enforcement strategies
- Experience handling complex prosecutions
- International or cross-cultural work experience
- Teaching, training, or curriculum development experience
