The Role

As an Attorney-Advisor, you will handle a diverse portfolio of correctional law and federal litigation matters. Your day-to-day will involve:

  • Navigating complex issues regarding conditions of confinement, medical care, and religious accommodations.
  • Advising Executive Staff on institutional policy and correctional management.
  • Collaborating with prosecutors on crimes involving correctional operations.
  • Representing the agency in District Court to advocate for BOP policies and decisions.
  • This role requires a high degree of independence in legal research and writing, as well as the ability to adapt quickly to BOP protocols to provide high-level advocacy.

The Law Enforcement Component

  • Note: This is a primary law enforcement position. Candidates must be prepared to fulfill the dual role of attorney and law enforcement officer. This includes:
  • Mandatory completion of “Introduction to Correctional Techniques” (Phases I and II).
    Maintaining readiness to perform correctional duties during emergencies, staff shortages, or institutional crises.
  • Operational responsibilities such as inmate supervision, contraband “shakedowns,” and responding to institutional disturbances.
  • Age Requirement: Per 5 U.S.C. 3307, the maximum entry age for initial appointment is 39. Applicants over 39 must submit an SF-50 verifying prior federal law enforcement coverage. (Qualified Preference Eligible Veterans may be exempt).

Qualifications & Requirements

Education: Must hold a J.D. degree from an accredited institution.
Licensure: Active membership in good standing of the bar of any U.S. jurisdiction.
Preferred Experience: Prior experience in correctional law or federal civil litigation is highly desired but not required.
Travel: Periodic travel to various CLC facilities and relevant district or appellate courts is required.
